Staying Cool From the Inside Out: Supporting Pitta During the Hottest Part of Summer

There’s something special about late summer in New England. The tomatoes are finally ripe, the farmers markets are overflowing with colorful produce, and long evenings invite us to linger outside just a little longer. It's a season that encourages us to soak up every last bit of sunshine before autumn arrives.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, however, this is also the time of year when it's especially important to pay attention to balance.
Late summer is governed by Pitta dosha, the combination of fire and a little water. Pitta gives us the warmth that fuels digestion, the sharpness that helps us think clearly, and the drive that allows us to accomplish our goals. But when there is too much heat—whether from the weather, our schedules, or even our mindset—that same fire can begin to work against us.
Fortunately, Ayurveda reminds us that our bodies are constantly adapting to the world around us. By making a few simple seasonal adjustments, we can support our natural ability to stay balanced, energized, and comfortable through the hottest weeks of summer.
Understanding the Seasonal Cycle
One of the beautiful teachings of Ayurveda is that nothing stays the same forever. Every season moves through a natural progression of three stages:
Accumulation – the qualities of a season begin to build.
Aggravation – those qualities reach their peak and can create imbalance.
Dissipation – the season gradually gives way to the next.
Think about the transition from spring into summer. During the cool, damp months of spring, Kapha qualities—heaviness, moisture, and stability—gradually accumulate. As temperatures rise, that accumulated heaviness begins to melt away.
At the same time, summer's heat begins to build.

By August, we've spent months exposed to sunshine, warmer temperatures, outdoor activities, travel, and often busier schedules. The fiery qualities of Pitta have accumulated throughout the season and are now reaching their highest point. This doesn't mean everyone will experience problems, but it does mean we're more likely to notice signs that our internal "thermostat" is running a little too hot.
As the days slowly become shorter and cooler toward the end of August, Pitta will gradually begin to settle, making way for the dry, cool qualities of Vata in early fall.
Understanding this rhythm allows us to work with the season instead of feeling surprised when our bodies begin asking for something different.
How Pitta Shows Up in Nature
You don't have to know anything about Ayurveda to recognize Pitta in the world around you.
It's the bright afternoon sun.
It's sidewalks radiating heat long after sunset.
It's gardens bursting with colorful vegetables and herbs.
It's tomatoes, peppers, basil, peaches, watermelon, and berries reaching their peak.
Everything about late summer reflects transformation, growth, and intensity.
Our bodies experience these same influences.
Signs That Pitta May Be Running High
When Pitta becomes excessive, it often shows up in predictable ways.
In the Skin
Summer can be wonderful for spending time outdoors, but it also places extra demands on our skin.

You might notice:
Increased sensitivity
Redness
Heat or flushing
Breakouts
Rashes
Sun irritation
Excess oil production
Supporting the skin during this season means focusing on hydration and gentle nourishment rather than harsh treatments. Drinking enough water, protecting your skin from prolonged sun exposure, and using calming products can all help maintain balance.
Professional facials can also be incredibly supportive during this time of year. Our Tropical Superfood Facial is designed to replenish hydration and provide antioxidant support after months of summer sun.
In Digestion
In Ayurveda, Pitta is closely connected to our digestive fire, known as Agni.
Healthy Agni allows us to digest food efficiently and absorb nutrients well.
But too much fire can create discomfort.
Signs may include:
Heartburn
Acid reflux
Loose stools
Increased hunger
Feeling overheated after meals
Irritability when hungry
Late summer is often a wonderful time to enjoy foods that naturally cool and hydrate the body.
Think:

Cucumbers
Watermelon
Berries
Leafy greens
Fresh herbs
Zucchini
Coconut
Mint
Cilantro
Farmers markets are full of foods that happen to provide exactly the qualities many of us need this time of year—a wonderful example of nature offering support in season.
Emotionally and Energetically
Pitta isn't only physical.
Its energy also influences how we think and interact with the world.
Balanced Pitta brings:
Confidence
Motivation
Organization
Leadership
Clear thinking
Healthy ambition

When there's too much heat, those strengths can begin to tip toward:
Irritability
Frustration
Impatience
Perfectionism
Criticism
Feeling like everything needs to happen right now
Sound familiar?
August often comes with looming deadlines, vacation planning, back-to-school preparation, and an attempt to squeeze every last bit out of summer. It's easy to become overstimulated without realizing it.
Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do isn't adding another task to our to-do list—it's intentionally creating moments of coolness, quiet, and rest.
Simple Ways to Stay Cool From the Inside Out
Supporting Pitta doesn't have to be complicated.
A few small shifts can make a big difference.
Drink water consistently throughout the day instead of waiting until you're thirsty.
Enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables while they're at their peak.
Choose lighter meals when the weather is especially hot.
Spend time outdoors during the cooler morning or evening hours.
Prioritize restful sleep.
Create space for activities that feel joyful rather than competitive.
Take breaks from screens and constant stimulation.
Schedule time for bodywork before stress begins to accumulate.
One of our favorite ways to support the body during August is our Cool Stone Massage.
Unlike hot stone massage, cool stones provide a refreshing sensation that helps calm the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and encourage deep relaxation. It's an especially wonderful choice for anyone feeling overheated, physically active, or mentally stretched thin.
Looking Ahead

Although summer is still very much here, nature is already beginning its slow transition.
The evenings grow just a little cooler.
The sun sets a little earlier.
The first hints of harvest begin appearing at local farms.
These subtle changes remind us that seasons are always moving—and we can move with them.
By supporting Pitta now, we give ourselves a steadier foundation for the transition into autumn and the drier, cooler qualities of Vata season.
At Little Bird Wellness, we believe wellness isn't about following the same routine all year long. It's about listening to what your body needs today, recognizing how the seasons influence your health, and making small, sustainable adjustments that help you feel your best.
Sometimes that begins with something as simple as slowing down, taking a deep breath, and allowing yourself to cool off—from the inside out. 💜
